Research approach
We use a mix of manufacturer documentation and install manuals, product pages, published specifications, NEC and utility guidance, and editorial synthesis. For buying content we add owner reports from Reddit, car-owner forums, YouTube review comments, electrician boards, and verified purchase reviews, because that is where the real install cost and the six-month truth live. Installed-cost figures come from real quotes and installer input, are dated on the page, and get re-verified on a schedule, not just on complaints. Rebate and incentive figures are dated too, because they change by utility, by state, and with federal policy.
How we evaluate products and brands
We judge chargers and brands on fit, not on abstract prestige. A premium 48-amp hardwired unit can still be a bad recommendation for a buyer whose panel would need a costly upgrade to run it, and a bargain charger can still be a bad recommendation if it has no UL listing or depends on an app that could disappear. When a charger is overpriced, rated with an amperage claim its listing can't support, unlisted for safety, or dependent on a cloud service that could be shut down, we say so directly. Every negative we publish is sourced and defensible, per our methodology.
Updates and corrections
We update guides when prices move, models are discontinued, connectors shift, code or incentive rules change, or a page is otherwise outdated. The NACS transition and utility rebate programs move faster than most of this niche, so connector and incentive pages get re-verified on a schedule and dated on the page. If a factual issue is reported, we correct it as quickly as possible and prefer updating the page over letting stale guidance linger.
Keeping current, without urgency theater
New EVs launch year-round with new charge rates and connectors, and incentive windows open and close. When a major shift lands, we add a dated, factual update block to the affected pages: what changed, what it means for a buyer today, and what to do about it. Those updates are service, not marketing. No countdown timers, no “before the rebate ends” pressure, no invented scarcity. If a program really is ending, we say the date plainly and let the reader decide.
Health and safety content
A Level 2 charger is a continuous 240V load, one of the largest in a house, and installed wrong it starts fires. There is real reporting on melted NEMA 14-50 outlets under EV charging. We treat wire and breaker sizing, GFCI, outlet-vs-hardwire, and permitting as safety topics, not content angles. Those pages are written conservatively, cite NEC and manufacturer install manuals, carry no product links and no email capture, and never bend to stay commercially useful. They are not a substitute for a licensed electrician, and we never coach unlicensed 240V wiring.
What independence means here
Independence does not mean having no commercial interests. It means not letting those interests dictate the verdict. Some links on this site earn a commission, and some installer referrals earn a disclosed flat fee. No commission has ever moved a ranking, and if the cheaper charger, the lower amperage, load management over a panel upgrade, or no Level 2 at all is the better answer, that is the recommendation.
